Political Parties Celebrate Smooth Start to Campaign Season

The second day of the election campaign season continued yesterday with all parties conducting rallies smoothly, peacefully, and safely. This year’s general election has a total of 18 parties on the ballot, with the leading Cambodian People’s Party holding the largest event by far.

During the first two days of campaign season, political parties held rallies and parades in an orderly schedule where supporters participated in meetings, marches, and concerts at party headquarters and in mobile convoys where they handed out leaflets.

President of the royalist FUNCINPEC Party, Prince Norodom Chakravuth, led a rally of over 5,000 party members, leaders, and youth activists in Phnom Penh. FUNCINPEC spokesman NEE-UN Raden told EAC News that the election campaign was organized by the National Election Commission (NEC) in collaboration with local authorities. He said that unlike in the past, traffic congestion was not an issue for their event.

Meanwhile, the Cambodian Youth Party, led by the party president PEK SRA, organized the party’s first large parade from the headquarters of the Cambodian Youth Party from their headquarters on Sunday afternoon. PEK SRA, told EAC News that despite some disruptions during the march, the procession went smoothly as planned, with about 1,500 participants.

The Beehive Social Democratic Party, with Mam Sonando as its president, also participated in Sunday’s campaign kickoff. He stated that his party did not organize a large parade, but instead distributed leaflets around Phnom Penh and the provinces. He observed that no problems occurred during the campaign for any party.

The ruling Cambodian People's Party (CPP) celebrated its 72nd anniversary on Saturday morning, under the leadership of CPP President, Prime Minister Hun Sen, with more than 70,000 participants. After the ceremony, tens of thousands of CPP members marched on the campaign trail to inspire people on the streets and in the provinces to vote for their party. As the main parade ran from Koh Pich through the streets of Phnom Penh on Saturday afternoon, the CPP committees of all 14 districts marched in their respective neighborhoods.

The election campaign for the 7th National Assembly election is held for 21 days from July 1 to 21, with voters heading to the polls on July 23.
